The most common symptoms of HDD failure

Has your hard drive stopped working? Identify the symptom

A hard drive can fail in a handful of typical ways — from clicking heads, through no detection, to the after-effects of a drop or a format. Below are the most common symptoms and what usually lies behind them. We confirm the cause with a free diagnosis before quoting a price — and you pay only after your data has been successfully recovered.

The drive clicks, ticks or beeps

Typical causes: damaged heads, a seized motor bearing, a stuck arm or heads stuck to the platters. This is a mechanical failure — do not power the drive up again; every restart scratches the platters.

Why a drive clicks and whether the data can be recovered.

Drive invisible, not detected

Typical causes: damaged electronics (PCB), a firmware / service-area error, a damaged head or a burnt-out startup head. The drive spins, but the BIOS and system do not "recognise" it or report the wrong capacity.

We read the drive outside the operating system, on a PC-3000 workstation — bypassing the damaged firmware.

Drive after a drop or knock

Typical causes: dropping a laptop or external drive damages the heads or shifts them off the ramp onto the platters. Symptoms: clicking, no detection, a visibly bent 2.5" drive casing.

We carry out head replacement in controlled conditions — with parts from a donor.

Drive after water damage or damp

Typical causes: flooding, a burst pipe, damp in a cellar — corrosion of contacts and the PCB, moisture inside the drive's sealed chamber. It is essential not to dry out or power up the drive yourself.

We clean and dry the media, replace the electronics and read the platters.

Bad sectors, drive slows and freezes

Typical causes: mounting bad sectors, degradation of the platter surface, weakening heads. Symptoms: copying "hangs", the system takes a long time to start, files vanish, a RAW partition appears.

We make a sector-by-sector image of the drive on hardware resistant to bad sectors, then recover from the copy.

After formatting, RAW, deleted files

Typical causes: an accidental format, a deleted partition, deleted photos and documents, "the drive asks to be formatted". Success depends on whether new data has overwritten the old — stop using the drive.

Media damage symptoms — when to bring it to a service centre.

Classes of hard drive failure

Four types of HDD failure — four different recovery processes

Not every data loss looks the same. Before we quote for recovery, at the free diagnosis we establish which class of failure we are dealing with — because a logical file-system error is an entirely different process (and cost) than head replacement inside an opened drive.

A head above a drive platter — this is where the fate of your data is decided after mechanical failure

The diagnosis first answers one question: is the drive damaged physically, or only logically?

Everything depends on that — the time, the method and the price. Logical failures we recover from a sector image without opening the drive. Electronics and firmware failures require work on a PC-3000 workstation. The hardest — mechanical — require opening the drive and replacing the heads in controlled conditions, with access to a laminar-flow clean room. Below we describe each class.

Logical failure

Most common · fastest recovery

What happens: the drive is physically sound, but the system cannot see the files — after formatting, deleting a partition, a virus attack, with a RAW partition or "the drive asks to be formatted".

How we recover: we create a sector image of the drive, then reconstruct the file structure and extract the data from the copy — with no risk to the original.

Electronics failure (PCB)

After a power surge / short circuit

What happens: a damaged controller board (PCB) after a power surge, short circuit or water damage — the drive does not spin, is not detected or "smells of burning".

How we recover: we repair or replace the PCB and transfer the original ROM chip (adaptation), so the drive regains access to its own operating parameters.

Firmware failure

Drive visible but inaccessible

What happens: damaged service-area modules — the drive "hangs", does not become ready, reports zero or wrong capacity, freezes in a "busy" state.

How we recover: we enter technology mode on the PC-3000 workstation, repair the firmware modules and unlock access to the data area.

Mechanical failure

Requires opening the drive · the hardest

What happens: damaged or stuck heads, a seized motor, scratched platters — most often after a drop. The symptoms are ticking, clicking, beeping.

How we recover: we open the drive in controlled conditions, replace the heads or motor with parts from a matched donor and read the platters sector by sector.

We always confirm the failure class and the chances of recovery at a free diagnosis — only then do we quote a price. You pay only after your data has been successfully recovered.

How recovery works

4 steps from request to recovered data

Full transparency at every stage. The diagnosis is free, you learn the price before recovery, and you pay only after your data has been successfully recovered.

  1. Request

Call or order a 24h courier. Disconnect the drive and describe the symptoms — clicking, no detection, a drop, a format. Bring it to Praga-Południe or send it from anywhere in Poland.

  2. Free diagnosis

Free of charge we establish the failure class — logical, electronics, firmware or mechanical — and assess the real chances of recovery. We read the drive on a PC-3000 workstation.

  3. Quote before recovery

We give you a specific cost and a list of what can be recovered — with no hidden fees. You decide whether we go ahead. Backing out costs nothing.

  4. Recovery and handover of data

We recover the data, show you a file list to verify and hand it over on new media. You pay only after a successful recovery. We issue a VAT invoice.

An honest talk about the odds

What really affects data recovery from your drive

Data recovery is not magic — the chances depend on what happened to the drive and what was done to it after the failure. We would rather say so plainly than promise the impossible. A few things can make the situation irreversibly worse — and a few simple ones you can avoid.

What lowers the chances of recovery

  • Powering up a clicking drive again. Every start of damaged heads scratches the platters — and a scratched surface can no longer be read.
  • Repeated attempts with recovery software. Forcing software strains a weakening drive and can overwrite the very data we want to save.
  • Opening the drive yourself. Dust from the room settles on the platters within seconds. A drive is only opened in controlled conditions.
  • Writing to the drive after a format. The more new data written after deletion, the greater the chance the old data has been overwritten for good.
  • Drying a water-damaged drive with heat. A hairdryer or radiator deepens corrosion and deforms components. Do not power it up and do not dry it — bring it as it is.

Before you hand over the drive — do this

  • Disconnect the drive and do not power it up again. This is the most important thing — especially when it ticks or clicks.
  • Do not run recovery software. If the data matters, do not experiment — every attempt reduces the chances.
  • Note down what happened. A drop, a power surge, a format, water damage — this information speeds up the diagnosis.
  • Pack the drive safely. Wrap it in bubble wrap and put it in a rigid box — it protects the heads in transit.
  • Call or order a courier. We will collect the drive from anywhere in Poland and carry out a free diagnosis.

And if the data cannot be recovered? It happens — with deeply scratched platters or repeated overwriting. We will tell you plainly at the diagnosis stage, before you pay anything. With us, payment is made only after a successful recovery — for a failed attempt we do not charge for the work itself.

How do I recover data from a damaged HDD that ticks or clicks?

Ticking and clicking is a symptom of mechanical failure — most often damaged heads. The most important thing: do not power the drive up again, because every start scratches the platters and reduces the chances. Disconnect the drive and bring it to us — we open the media in controlled conditions, replace the heads with parts from a donor and read the platters. Read more in our guide on why a drive clicks and whether the data can be recovered.

How much does HDD data recovery cost?

The price depends on the failure class. As a guide: logical recovery (format, deleted files, bad sectors) from PLN 300, electronics damage from PLN 400, firmware damage from PLN 900, and a mechanical failure with head replacement PLN 1,000–4,500. The diagnosis and quote are free, and you pay only after a successful recovery. We give the exact price after the diagnosis — call: 512 800 030.

Will you recover data from a drive after formatting or deleting a partition?

Yes, we recover data after an accidental format, a deleted partition and deleted files. Success depends on whether new data has overwritten the old — so stop using the drive straight away and do not save anything to it. The sooner it reaches us, the greater the chance of a full recovery.

My hard drive is not detected — what should I do?

No detection is usually electronics (PCB) or firmware damage. Do not try to repair the drive yourself or run free recovery software — you can make things worse. Disconnect the media and call: 512 800 030. We read such drives outside the operating system, on PC-3000 equipment, bypassing the damaged firmware.

Do you recover data from a drive after a drop or water damage?

Yes. After a drop the heads are most often damaged — we replace them and read the platters. After water damage we clean the corrosion off the media and replace the electronics. In both cases it is essential not to power up or dry out the drive yourself — bring it in exactly as it is.

Can I send the drive by courier or to a parcel locker?

Yes, we handle jobs from anywhere in Poland. You can order a DPD courier (PLN 20 one way, PLN 40 return) or send the drive to an InPost parcel locker (WAW47A). Pack the drive in bubble wrap and a rigid box. After recovery we return the data on new media. Order a courier online.

Is my data safe and confidential? Do you issue a VAT invoice?

Yes. We work in a zone cut off from the public network, on request we sign a confidentiality clause, and after handing over the recovered data we irreversibly erase it from our media. CSE Poland Sp. z o.o. (NIP 113-310-78-61) issues VAT invoices — we serve companies, law firms, accounting offices and institutions.
